Feed birds through winter

by making fat feed balls

Bread is one of the most wasted food products. Use your leftover stale bread in winter to help your local bird population and increase biodiversity in your area by making bird fat feed balls.

All you’ll need is:

  • Leftover/stale bread
  • Lard or butter
  • Nuts, seeds, cheese, or dried fruit
  • A bowl

Method:

  1. Mix the butter/lard, bread and other bits into a paste that’s thick enough to clump together Form balls from the paste and leave to set in the fridge for 12 hours.
  2. Form balls from the paste and leave to set in the fridge for 12 hours.
  3. Place the set balls outdoors in a higher spot so the birds can see it easily.
  4. Congratulations! You have successfully reduced food waste and carbon dioxide emissions in your local community. You have also helped your local bird population get through winter, increasing biodiversity in your community.
