It’s a new school term and we’re back in the schools after the festive break, raring to get growing again (pun intended!)
The pupils planted something a bit different this week, that will hopefully last many years and provide food for future generations of kids. Fruit bushes! We have gone for blackcurrants and autumn fruiting raspberries, which should be ready to pick when the pupils get back after the summer holidays.
This was by no means an easy task, but the kids worked as an amazing team to dig holes, add compost to the right level, position the bushes, cover them over and water them in.
Having fruit bushes at each school opens up the possibility to teach the pupils about an area of gardening that they otherwise would not have the opportunity to learn. We have already learned about how to plant a fruit bush and the conditions they need and later in the year they will learn how to harvest the fruit from them, ways of cooking the fruit, how to prune them and eventually how to propagate them.
